The actor posted snapsof himself below the famous Michelangelo paintings that adorn the walls and ceilings of the chapel on May 9.
In the caption, he wrote, "I LOVE YOU ITALY what a beautiful start to our day off enjoying ROMA."
Some fans commented on the photo, highlighting the different rules for celebritiesand the general public.
All I remember about that place was no photos please, shared someone else.
We, regular people, are not allowed to film inside the Sistine chapel, posted another.
Another person posted: We cant take pics but ofc celebrities can. Nothing against Jason ( I adore him) but its not fair.
Jason Momoa is apologizing for breaking the rules at the Vatican.
The Aquaman star, 42, appeared in a workout video on his Instagram Saturday, in which he addressed the photos he took inside the Sistine Chapel last week. "Want to send apologize [sic] for any disrespect i love your culture and history," he captioned the post, in part.
"If you ever thought that I disrespected your culture, it wasnt my intention," the star said in the video, in which he was seen lifting weights while shirtless.
He also explained that "now that I can, I gave [the Vatican] a wonderful donationto bring my friends and crew because we only had a couple days off to go experience these places."
Momoa explained, "I found people really wanted to take pictures with me [there], which is very odd in the church Vatican looking at all this splendor." While he said he didnt "get" why people would want to take pictures with him there, he went ahead and tried to appease his fans.
"So I was very respectful and I asked for permission from what I thought would be OK," Momoa said in the clip, presumably referring to Vatican staff.
Of the gaffe, Momoa again apologized, saying, "I would never want to do anything to disrespect someones culture. So if I did, I apologize. It wasnt my intention.""I definitely paid to have that private moment and give a nice donation to the church," he added. "Sorry if I offended you."
However, in return for funding the project, Nippon TV got exclusive rights to all photography and video relating to the work. This meant the process of restoration itself and all the final restored art. A photographer called Takashi Okamura was commissioned and he set about recording it all.
Since making the deal, Nippon TV has made over a dozen documentaries, including a few in English, and coffee-table books of the art, translated into several languages. Although NTV has never announced if they made any profit, it seemed like they had made a good deal.
In 2012, an Italian literary critic called Pietro Citati caused a storm when he wrote an open letter to a major newspaper denouncing the crowds. He argued that the chapel and its art was supposed to be a place of quiet contemplation. The hordesof tourists disrupt that. If they were armed with cameras, it would be worse.
He has a point. In the popular summer months, around 30,000 people visit the chapel every day. The temperature can reach 40 Celsius and that can lead to safety issues. Only the Sistine Chapel itself is air-conditioned and it is claimed that at least 10 visitors faint a day just while queuing to get in. Others have been injured and several have had panic attacks.
The main reason people think there is a ban is down to the damage flash photography does to art over time. Which is another valid point. While it is pretty easy to turn off a flash, there are a surprising amount of people who ‘forget’, even though a flash wouldn’t make any difference in a room that size.
But the mere presence of that many people brings other problems that damage the art. Antonio Paolucci, the director of the Vatican Museums, said in an article in the Vatican newspaper:“Pressure caused by humans such as dust introduced, the humidity of bodies, carbon dioxide produced by perspiration can cause unease for the visitors, and in the long run, possible damage to the paintings.”
